Continuer CAS

Continuer CAS can be issued to current students who need more time to complete their course and need to make a new Student visa application.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you request your CAS as early as possible. Please be aware that if you are extending/transferring to a course that requires ATAS clearance, we cannot produce a new CAS until you have obtained your new ATAS clearance certificate.

Please read the information below carefully and contact the Student Immigration Team at visa@manchester.ac.uk if you have any questions.

A Continuer CAS may be issued to current students for:

  • Adding a Placement/Study Abroad Year
  • Changing Academic Level (e.g. BEng to Meng)
  • Returning from Interruption/Resit without Attendance
  • An agreed PGR extension where the researcher will be based in the UK
  • Resitting/Repeating in attendance
  • Switching to a Student visa (e.g. from a Dependant Visa)
  • Being elected as a Students’ Union Sabbatical Officer

A Continuer CAS cannot be issued for:

  • Applicants/current UoM students who are starting a new course – a CAS will be created for you by your new School/Doctoral Academy
  • To extend your Student visa whilst awaiting the results of an appeal
  • Where you have failed to obtain ATAS clearance where it is required
  • Where further student visa sponsorship would lead to you exceeding the UKVI’s maximum time limit for study at your academic level
  • To extend your Student visa to cover a period that you do not intend to be in the UK (e.g. PhDs choosing to write-up overseas)
  • Graduate Route eligibility – the CAS must be issued for academic reasons
  • Where you have an adverse immigration history
  • Where there is reason to believe that visa sponsorship will put the University’s sponsor licence at risk, including concerns about your intention to attend and engage with your programme of study, complete your studies, or your genuineness as a student

  • All Negative Service Indicators must be resolved and removed, including indicators for debts to the University (debts must be cleared in full before Credit Control indicators can be removed).
  • You must have obtained new ATAS clearance if you are currently on/transferring to an ATAS-required course (unless exempt). Please see our ATAS guidance
  • You must have provided the Student Immigration Team with a copy of your current Passport and a Share Code (if your visa is currently valid).

You may need to request a Continuer CAS up to 3 months before you need your new student visa to start. For example, 3 months before:

  • Your visa expires
  • Returning from interruption

To request a Continuer CAS, please contact your School/Doctoral Academy for a CCR1 Form. If you are unsure where to request the form, please contact your Student Support Hub.

Your School/Doctoral Academy will send the completed form to us, where we will assess the request and create a new CAS if you are eligible.

Once the CAS is ready, a confirmation email will be sent to your University email address.  You must read this email carefully and take note of any actions. The Continuer CAS will then be sent the same/next working day. Please ensure you read both emails carefully.

When you receive your new CAS, it is your responsibility to check the details carefully to ensure that they are all correct.

Please see our Student Visa webpages for guidance on your application. You cannot travel while your visa application is in progress.

If you are applying inside the UK, you must provide evidence of your new visa application to the Student Immigration Team as soon as you have applied. This must be either the UKVI Document Checklist or your Visa Application Payment Confirmation.

Once you have received a decision on your application, you must inform us straightaway.

If your application is successful, you must provide a new Share Code for your University record to be updated.

If you are applying outside the UK, you must also provide evidence of your arrival in the UK (stamped entry clearance vignette or boarding pass).

If your application is refused, please contact us straight away so we can advise further.

The Student Immigration Team may withdraw your CAS if you fail to provide updates or evidence of an in-progress visa application/new Student visa.

If you need to request a Continuer CAS for a reason that has not been mentioned below, please contact us with your student ID number and more information, so we can advise further.

  • Please read our Programme Change Guide to check if you need to make a new visa application, and if you are eligible to apply inside the UK.
  • Your School will confirm when you can request a new CAS, and the deadlines for your programme transfer. You must ensure you apply with enough time to obtain your new visa documents before your School’s deadline.
  • If you are transferring to a course that requires ATAS, you must have obtained new clearance before requesting a CAS. This includes if you are adding a Placement Year to your current course that already requires ATAS.
  • You will only be eligible for the IHS refund if you make your new Student visa application inside the UK.
  • A standard inside-UK visa application can take up to 8 weeks (once all documents have been submitted).
  • Important: You cannot transfer programmes or commence the Placement/Study Abroad until you have provided the Student Immigration Team with your new visa documents and we have verified that they are correct.

  • If you have recently been placed on Interruption/Resit Without Attendance, please see our Changes to your Studies page for how this will affect your current Student visa.
  • If we have been required to cease sponsorship of your Student visa, you must make your new visa application from your home country.
  • For an overseas visa application, you can request a CCR1 Form up to 4 months before you are due to return (for example, if you are due to return to your studies in September, you can request the CCR1 Form from May).
  • If you have resit exams to take within 60 days of resuming your studies (e.g. August resits before returning in September, or January exams before returning for Semester 2), the Continuer CAS will cover the resits & remainder of your studies. A Continuer CAS will only be issued to cover August/January resits, if these exams have been confirmed.

  • You can request a Continuer CAS up to 3 months before your current Student visa expires for an inside UK visa application.
  • MPhil Extensions and MPhil to PhD/PhD to MPhil Programme Transfer visa applications must be made outside the UK.
  • Approval must be obtained from your Doctoral Academy/Supervisor before leaving the UK to make a visa application overseas.
  • You must have obtained new ATAS clearance (if applicable) before a new CAS can be issued. Important: If your course has been extended by 3 months or more beyond your current CAS End Date, you must have applied for new ATAS within 28 days of this extension being applied to your record. This is regardless of whether a new CAS/visa application is required.

Undergraduate Students

  • Applying inside the UK: You can request a Continuer CAS up to 3 months before your current visa expires. For example, if your current visa expires on 30th October 2025, you can receive a Continuer CAS from 31st July 2025.
  • Applying outside the UK: You can request a new CAS during the Summer before your current visa expires. For example, if your current visa expires on 30th October 2025, you can request a CCR1 Form from June 2025, to apply for your new Student visa in your home country over the Summer vacation period. Important: You cannot travel while your application is in progress, so you must apply with enough time to obtain the new visa before returning to Campus in September.
  • When completing your CCR1 Form, you must be certain on whether you would like to make your Student visa application inside or outside the UK, as this will affect the dates on your Continuer CAS.

Postgraduate Taught Students:

  • If you are repeating the year in attendance, you can request a new CAS up to 3 months before your current Student visa expires. For example: if your current visa expires on 30th January 2026, you can receive a Continuer CAS from 30th October 2025
  • You must make your new Student visa application before your current visa expires.
  • Important: If you are not repeating the full year but still need more time in the UK to complete your course (e.g. for a dissertation extension) please contact your School about whether they will agree for a new CAS to be issued, as they will also need to monitor your attendance. Please note if your final submission deadline is before your current visa expiry, a Continuer CAS cannot be issued.
  • Continuer CAS issued for dissertation extensions must be made outside the UK, so please contact us if you have any queries about this.
  • If any of the circumstances of your studies change after a Continuer CAS has been issued (e.g. you fail a resit that is required to allow you to progress onto your dissertation), this may result in the withdrawal of your Student visa sponsorship.

  • You do not need to wait until 3 months before your current visa expiry, but you must ensure you make your Student visa application before your current visa expires.
  • Important: If you are currently studying in the UK under the Standard Visitor Route (e.g. for Erasmus Semester 1), you must make your Student visa application outside the UK if your course is extended and becomes longer than 6 months overall.
