Your eVisa

Most physical immigration documents are being replaced by eVisas. This includes BRP cards issued to students who have been granted a student visa with an expiry date later than 31 December 2024 but their BRP card expires on that date.

Getting an eVisa is free and won’t change your permission to live in the UK.

You’ll need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account before the end of 2024 to access your eVisa.

You might already have a UKVI account if you've applied for:

    • pre-settled or settled status from the EU Settlement Scheme

    • a British National (Overseas) visa - and you're from Hong Kong

There is useful information about Evisas on the UKCISA website including frequently asked questions.

Using eVisas and setting-up your UKVI account

Check your eVisa is correct before you travel outside the UK or before you return to the UK if you are currently overseas

You need to check that your eVisa is displaying the correct information such as your personal information and passport information a few weeks before you travel using the UKVI's view and prove your immigration status service. If any of your details are incorrect you will need to report the error to UKVI through their website.

You need to check that the passenger information that you have provided to your airline matches the details on your passport and immigration permission (visa). Please read the information on the UKVI website before you travel outside the UK.

To board your flight to the UK you may need to show:-

  • a share code from the view and prove service which you should obtain before travelling
  • a screen shot from your UKVI account displaying your immigration status

or

  • a physical document confirming your UK status or immigration permission (visa)

Updating your UKVI account

You will need to update your UKVI account before your BRP card expires on 31 December, 2024 with your current passport details if you used your BRP card to validate your eVisa. Your passport will then become your primary travel document.

You will also need to update your UKVI account if:

    • you renew or replace the identity document you used to apply - for example if you obtain a new passport
    • you change your name
    • you change your contact details or address

You will also need to send a copy of your new passport or proof of name change to visa@manchester.ac.uk

You must keep your contact details updated in MyManchester (including your UK accommodation address, personal e-mail address, and your UK telephone number)

Proving your eVisa or digital immigration status

You can give a share code to someone who needs to check your immigration status - like the university, your landlord or a prospective employer.

You can get a share code on the Government's 'View and Prove' webpage, by selecting ‘Start Now’. When obtaining a sharecode to send to the University, make sure you choose the purpose of the check as ‘other’ instead of 'work' or 'rent', as these codes will not work to check your right to study status.

This code is only valid for 90 days - if it isn’t used within the 90 days you’ll need to get a new one.

If you have problems with your eVisa

If there is an error with your information in your eVisa you can report it online through the UKVI website and UKVI will contact you within 10 working days.

The types of errors you can report are:-

  • name
  • sponsor licence number
  • photo
  • visa conditions
  • expiry date
  • immigration status

If you are experiencing any other issues with your Evisa you need to contact the UK Visas and Immigration contact centre.
