If your passport is lost or stolen, follow the steps below that apply to your situation and contact us if you experience any difficulties.
Most students will not have a BRP card, as these have been replaced by eVisas. However, if you still hold a card and it has been lost or stolen, you should follow the BRP guidance below.
Lost or Stolen Passport
If your passport has been lost or stolen, follow the instructions below based on where you are currently located.
If you are in the UK
- Report the loss or theft to the police and request a crime reference number or written confirmation.
- Apply for a replacement passport: Contact your Embassy or Consulate in the UK. Processing times vary depending on your country of nationality.
- Update your UKVI account with your new passport information
- If you have an eVisa, view your eVisa to confirm that it is linked to your new passport. Your new passport must be linked to your eVisa before you travel outside the UK.
If you are outside the UK
- Report the loss or theft to the local police and obtain a written confirmation of the report (if possible).
- Apply for a replacement passport or emergency travel document: contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate for assistance.
- Check your permission to return to the UK: If your passport contained your visa vignette (entry clearance sticker), you may need to apply for additional permission before returning to the UK. Do not book travel until you are sure you have the correct documents to re-enter the UK.
- Update your UKVI account with your new passport information
- If you have an eVisa, view your eVisa to confirm that it is linked to your new passport. Your new passport must be linked to your eVisa before you travel to the UK.
Lost or Stolen BRP card
Most students will no longer have a BRP card as these have been replaced by eVisas.
However, if your BRP card is lost or stolen, you must report this separately to the Home Office.
