Additional guidance for Under 18-year-olds

We have created a step-by-step guide to help applicants and students applying from within the UK to complete the Student visa application form correctly. Please use this and the guidance below to double check your answers and supporting documentation before you submit your application.

We also strongly advise that you refer to UKVI's caseworker guide to supporting documents when preparing your documents for your Student visa application (information can also be found here). The Documents you submit in support of your application can be original, scans or copies.

Depending on your circumstances, you may need to submit some or all of the following with your application:

A current passport or travel document. Ideally your passport should be valid for the entire length of your course and beyond, to avoid you having to renew it whilst in the UK. If you need to renew your passport before you apply,  should allow yourself sufficient time to obtain a new passport from your country's embassy in the UK before you need to apply for your Student visa.

You need to have been issued with a valid CAS from The University of Manchester in order to submit a new Student visa application. This will be emailed to the address that you have registered with the University of Manchester.

Documents to show you have sufficient funds available to cover both your tuition fees and living expenses. For universities outside London (including Manchester), you will need to show the following:

  • Course fees for a maximum of one year of your course (as stated on your CAS)
  • Living expenses (maintenance) of £1023 for each month of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months (£9207). If your course includes part of a month you will need to include that month in your calculations.

If you have been studying in the UK for 12 months or more by the time you apply then you will be considred to already meet the financial requirements and should not need to submit evidence of your funds when you apply.

If you use a parent's bank account you must submit additional evidence consisting of a letter of consent and a copy of your birth certificate. (along with a translation if your birth certificate is not in English).

You must read our financial evidence document for information on financial evidence to ensure that your documents will be accepted. This includes more information about what you need to submit in different circumstances.

Your financial documents can be original or copies.

You should also read the UKVI guidance to ensure that your financial documents meet the necessary requirements.

Previous financial sponsorship

If you have previously studied in the UK and have been fully sponsored for both fees and maintenance by either a government or scholarship agency, and you have received money from them within the last 12 months, you must provide an additional letter of consent from your sponsor. The letter must confirm that they give you unconditional consent to remain in and re-enter the UK for an unlimited time. This letter is required if you have been fully sponsored within the last 12 months even if you are not financially sponsored by them any longer.

Academic Qualifications

If the course you will be studying is at degree level or above, you should not need to provide evidence of the qualification(s) listed on your CAS as the basis of your course offer. The Home Office relies on Higher Education Providers with a track record of compliance like The University of Manchester to assess applicants’ academic ability.

If you are applying to study a course below degree level (e.g. foundation or pre-sessional English programme) then you will still need to provide evidence of the academic qualification your offer of study was based on as part of your application (unless you are a differentiation national).

If you are a current University of Manchester student who is applying for an extension to your current course you will not need to include any academic documents as your CAS will confirm that you have been assessed on the basis of your current progress and attendance to date.

If you have previously studies in the UK then you will need to be able to provide evidence that you have successfully completed your last course in order to meet the academic progression requirements to apply from within the UK.

If any of the documents you need to submit as part of your visa application, like a birth certificate or bank statement, are not in English then they must be accompanied by a fully certified translation. Please refer to our translation guide to ensure your translation meets the necessary requirements.

Some students who intend to study in certain science or technology-based subjects are required to obtain a clearance certificate through the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) before they can apply for a visa or a visa extension unless they are otherwise exempt. If this requirement applies to you then your department or school should notify you that ATAS is a requirement for your course.

ATAS applications are free of charge and can be made up to six months before the start date of your course. The ATAS team aims to process applications within 30 working days of the submission of a completed application. However, during busier periods the process can take longer so you should submit your ATAS application as early as possible.

Please read through our ATAS application guidance to help you complete the online form.

If you are under 18 when you make your application you need to include a letter of consent from your parent(s)/legal guardian(s) as well as evidence of your relationship. These documents must meet specific requirements to be accepted by UKVI.

Please refer to our guide for under 18-year-olds for more information as well as a template consent letter you can use.

Most students applying in the UK should be eligible to use UKVI's ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app on a smart phone to verify their biometrics using a scan of their passport or BRP and avoid having to book and attend a biometric appointment.

If you do not use UKVI's app then, once you paid for your application online, you may need to book a biometric appointment at a UKVCAS centre. The nearest UKVCAS centre is in the Central Library in St Peter's Square in Manchester city centre. If you cannot book an appointment at the Central Library you should be able to book an appointment at one of the enhanced service points, but you will need to pay an additional charge to attend one of these centres. If you are extending your Student visa and you have already enrolled your biometrics since 2015 you may not need to attend another biometric appointment but UKVI will confirm this with you.

Do not worry if you cannot book a biometric appointment for a few weeks, as long as you pay for your visa application online before your visa expires you will have made an in-time application so you can attend a biometric appointment after your visa has expired. We cannot assist you with booking a biometric appointment as the appointments are managed by an external company called Sopra Steria.

Caution: You cannot travel outside the UK until you have been granted your new visa as doing so will automatically void your application.
