Interruptions/withdrawals

If a student takes a Leave of Absence or withdraws from their course part way through the academic year, the Student Payments & Registration Team will recalculate the tuition fee for the year.

The criteria used for recalculating fees for students differs for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Undergraduate Students

Tuition fees for all current undergraduate students, (including postgraduate students who are entitled to Student Finance, i.e. PGCE students) are calculated as follows:

  • Withdrawal/interruption between 03/10/2022 – 15/01/2023 – 25% of the total fee will be charged
  • Withdrawal/interruption between 16/01/2023 – 16/04/2023 – 50% of the total fee will be charged
  • Withdrawal/interruption between 17/04/2023 – 09/06/2023 – 100% (i.e. the full tuition fee) will be charged

23/24:

  • Withdrawal/interruption between 02/10/2023 – 14/01/2024 – 25% of the total fee will be charged
  • Withdrawal/interruption between 15/01/2024 – 14/04/2024 – 50% of the total fee will be charged
  • Withdrawal/interruption between 15/04/2024 – 07/06/2024 – 100% (i.e. the full tuition fee) will be charged

Students funded by Student Finance

For undergraduate students sponsored by Student Finance the amount of tuition fee loan requested by the University will equal the tuition fees due.

Self Financing Students

For self financing undergraduates if the amount paid is greater than the new rate of tuition fees due, a refund will be made, by returning the funds to the same payee or account from which the payment was made. If the student has not paid sufficient fees by the time of interruption/withdrawal then they will be notified by email to arrange payment.

Refunds can only be made once the School/Faculty have issued an official last date of attendance and confirmed this on student’s record so it is visible by staff in the Student Services Centre. Once this has been done, the tuition fees will be recalculated and if the student has paid an amount greater than the new rate of tuition fees due, a refund will be made, by returning the funds to the same payee or account from which the payment was made.

If you have any queries regarding a refund, please contact the Student Finance Team via our online form.

Students funded by Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS)

Tuition fees are paid directly to the University for students funded by SAAS. SAAS will not, however, pay fees for students who withdraw before the cut-off date. In such cases the student will become personally liable for tuition fees due up to the last day of attendance.

The cut-off dates for 2022/23 are as follows:

1 December 2022 for courses which start between 1 August 2022 and 31 December 2022
1 March 2023 for courses which start between 1 January 2023 and 31 March 2023
1 June 2023 for courses which start between 1 April 2023 and 30 June 2023

The cut-off dates for 2023/24 are as follows:

1 December 2023 for courses which start between 1 August 2023 and 31 December 2023
1 March 2024 for courses which start between 1 January 2024 and 31 March 2024
1 June 2024 for courses which start between 1 April 2024 and 30 June 2024

Postgraduate Students

For all postgraduate students (except modular students) and irrespective of the rate of tuition fees being charged, tuition fees are charged on a daily basis up to and including the last date of attendance on the programme.

Refunds can only be made once the School/Faculty have issued an official last date of attendance and confirmed this on a student’s record so it is visible by staff in the Student Services Centre.

Students funded by a Postgraduate Loan (Master's or Doctoral)

Students that interrupt or withdraw from their studies who are in receipt of either the Postgraduate Master's Loan or the Postgraduate Doctoral Loan will have their tuition fees charged on a daily basis up to and including the last date of attendance on the programme.

Students are responsible for ensuring all changes to their study are communicated to Student Finance in a timely manner. The effective date of the interruption or withdrawal will also be communicated to Student Finance by the Funding Team in the Student Services Centre. Please be aware that changes to study may affect your Postgraduate Loan entitlement. To discuss these changes and how they could affect your loan please contact Student Finance directly, or contact the Student Finance Team via our online form.

Modular Students

No fee is due if the student withdraws before the start of the module

No refund will be issued if the student withdraws after the module has started

Refunds to students with University debt

Please note if a student has a university debt, they will be contacted by Credit Control before any refunds are agreed.

Sponsored students (excluding Student Finance sponsorship)

Refunds are only made to sponsors at the request of the student or sponsor. Where a sponsor is only contributing part of the tuition, refunds will be made in favour of the student, unless the original sponsor letter specifies a percentage of any fee due.

Internal awards

When tuition fees are recalculated the school account which pays the internal award is automatically credited with the fee reduction amount.
