We recognise that not all students have access to a laptop or Wi-Fi - there are various ways in which the University may be able to help.

Laptops

We can help you access a laptop for your studies if you do not have one. To be considered for this support, you must be an undergraduate or postgraduate taught student and meet one of these criteria:

  • You are from a low-income background, in receipt of a University scholarship/bursary where financial need is a criteria (e.g. the Manchester Bursary, the Manchester Master’s Bursary, the Undergraduate Access Scholarship.)
  • You are care-experienced
  • You are estranged from your family
  • You are from a Gypsy, Roma or Traveller community
  • You are a sanctuary seeker (currently seeking asylum or have been granted refugee status)
  • You have a disability and are in receipt of (or are entitled to) a personal independence payment or disability living allowance
  • You are in receipt of a Disabled Student Allowance (DSA)
  • You are receiving support from the University’s Disability Advisory and Support Service (DASS)

If you meet the criteria and want to request a laptop loan, please log in to the IT support portal and submit a "student laptop loan" online form.

If you do not meet the criteria for this scheme, you can access laptops instead via:

Other support with IT costs

You may also be able to apply to the Living Cost Support Fund for financial support with IT equipment and other related costs. This fund is open to all students, regardless of level of study or nationality. It is open all year round and can award small grants and loans to help students overcome financial hardship.
