Baby born in the UK

If you have a Student visa and you are pregnant, you should inform staff in your Student Support Hub or Doctoral Academy so they can advise and support you. You will need to make decisions about where to have your baby and you will need to request an interruption of studies. If you are a research student you can interrupt for a maximum period of 4 months and we should be able to maintain sponsorship of your student visa so you would not be reported to UKVI and you can remain in the UK.

If you are an undergraduate or postgraduate taught student and you wish to interrupt for more than 60 days your interruption will be reported to UKVI and you and any dependants will need to leave the UK for the duration of your interruption. Please contact us for advice about interruptions as they can affect your immigration status. If you wish to interrupt for maternity leave you need to read our 'Changes to your Studies' section for more information.

If your baby is born in the UK then they can remain in the UK without applying for a visa. However, if you need to travel outside the UK your baby will require a passport or travel document and they will also need a dependant visa to re-enter the UK. Your child will also not be covered for free hospital treatment after the age of 3 months if they have not paid the immigration healthcare surcharge as part of a visa application.

UKVI are no longer issuing BRP cards so your baby will be issued with a digital dependant visa. You should be able to create a UKVI account for your baby when you start their dependant application online. You can use your baby's identity documents but your own contact details to set up the UKVI account. There is information about eVisas on our webpages.

For your baby to apply as your dependant from the UK both parents must be living together in the UK. Your baby can apply for the dependant visa from inside the UK or from your home country but you must obtain a passport or travel document for them from your Embassy in the UK. Your baby can apply at the same time as you if you require a visa extension or your baby can apply on their own. You must include their full birth certificate that includes the names of both parents along with the necessary financial evidence and a letter of consent from both parents. You either need to include a sponsor letter that confirms that your baby's living expenses are covered by your sponsorship or you need to submit your bank statements as evidence that you have held at least £680 per month for the duration of the visa your baby will receive up to a maximum of 9 months.

If you would like to us to check your baby's draft visa application and supporting documents please email them to us at visa@manchester.ac.uk

There is further information about applying for a dependant visa for your baby on the UKCISA website.
