Canvas: central learning environment

  • Canvas is the central platform for accessing your course materials, lecture recordings, submitting assignments and more. It supports your learning by bringing all your resources and essential information together in one convenient place.

Teaching and learning methods

  • Lectures - Lectures provide structured insights into key topics, often delivered to larger groups. While typically reserved for listening, some lecturers may encourage questions and interaction.
  • Seminars and tutorials - These smaller, interactive sessions promote discussion and deeper exploration of subject matter. They offer opportunities to engage with peers and academic staff, enhancing understanding through dialogue.
  • Laboratory and practical sessions - Hands-on learning is integral to many courses. Laboratory and practical sessions develop your skills in experimental methods and techniques, reinforcing theoretical knowledge through application.
  • Independent study - Independent study is a cornerstone of university learning. You'll be expected to manage your time effectively, engage with course materials, and pursue further reading to deepen your understanding.
  • Additional learning methods - Your programme may also include fieldwork, projects, eLearning, and research activities, providing diverse experiences that enrich your academic journey.

Assessments

  • Exams - There are two exam seasons, starting in January and May in each academic year. They are a very important method of assessment and often count for 100% of a course unit. Find support to help you before, during or after your exams here.
  • Continuous assessment - Many courses have some form of continuous assessment, such as essays, lab work, projects and other work done throughout the semester. The marks are taken into account as well as exams when deciding your grade.
