My Safety

Whilst it is unlikely your personal safety will be at risk during your time at University, it's always better to be prepared. We've compiled a list of resources to ensure you are aware of the steps you can take to stay as safe as possible during your time in Manchester.

Safety tips at home

  1. Always remember to lock your door after entering and leaving your house.
  2. Remember to close the windows if you are exiting the room.
  3. Leave all valuables out of sight.
  4. Join area groups on social media or follow local police to keep up to date.
  5. If you are going home for a long period of time then take your valuables with you.
  6. No tailgating. Do not allow a stranger to follow you into a property after you have gained access.
  7. Avoid the temptation of leaving a spare key in a 'hidden' place.
  8. Consider taking out insurance for your things. Some landlords also require tenants to insure the landlord's property.

Safety when out

  1. Know your own limits. Try to avoid drinking so much that you completely black out, or become aware of your surroundings. It is important to stay in control.
  2. Keep your phone charged, so that if you get separated from your friends you can still get in contact with them.
  3. Try and arrange a meeting point if someone gets lost - by the bar or toilets for example - in case you can't get in touch by text.
  4. Stay hydrated as best you can, especially if you're drinking a lot. Water will help you feel less sick and you'll feel better in the morning.
  5. Never get in unmarked taxis, always use a trusted method of transportation to get home.
  6. Don't walk home alone, especially late at night and in the early hours of the morning. Make sure you've got a friend with you.
  7. If you're out with people you don't live with, give them a text when you get home so they know you got back safely.
