Whilst it is unlikely your personal safety will be at risk during your time at University, it's always better to be prepared. We've compiled a list of resources to ensure you are aware of the steps you can take to stay as safe as possible during your time in Manchester.
Safety tips at home
- Always remember to lock your door after entering and leaving your house.
- Remember to close the windows if you are exiting the room.
- Leave all valuables out of sight.
- Join area groups on social media or follow local police to keep up to date.
- If you are going home for a long period of time then take your valuables with you.
- No tailgating. Do not allow a stranger to follow you into a property after you have gained access.
- Avoid the temptation of leaving a spare key in a 'hidden' place.
- Consider taking out insurance for your things. Some landlords also require tenants to insure the landlord's property.
Safety when out
- Know your own limits. Try to avoid drinking so much that you completely black out, or become aware of your surroundings. It is important to stay in control.
- Keep your phone charged, so that if you get separated from your friends you can still get in contact with them.
- Try and arrange a meeting point if someone gets lost - by the bar or toilets for example - in case you can't get in touch by text.
- Stay hydrated as best you can, especially if you're drinking a lot. Water will help you feel less sick and you'll feel better in the morning.
- Never get in unmarked taxis, always use a trusted method of transportation to get home.
- Don't walk home alone, especially late at night and in the early hours of the morning. Make sure you've got a friend with you.
- If you're out with people you don't live with, give them a text when you get home so they know you got back safely.
