This document covers the current charges for prescriptions and dental costs, claiming exemption or a reduction in cost (and a refund if you have already paid) plus how much you should expect to pay if you are an overseas student. It also includes key contact details for health issues.

Key Information

  • Most treatments for UK residents are free under the NHS are free. However, if you are aged 19+ and receive NHS treatments, you will be asked to pay for some prescriptions and services unless you meet certain criteria.
  • If you are an overseas student you will be required to pay £300 per year for healthcare under the NHS, this is mandatory and is collected as part of the immigration application process.
  • EU/EEA/SWISS students should obtain an EHIC card before arriving in the UK. This entitles the holder and their family full NHS treatment on the same basis as a UK resident.
