Quarantine Hotel Cost Support Fund

In response to the pandemic, the University committed to underwrite the quarantine hotel cost for those students arriving on campus for the 2021/22 academic year from ‘red-listed’ countries. In order to qualify students must be domiciled in a ‘red-listed’ country according to the official UK government listing.

Please note in response to recent developments the deadline for applications to the Quarantine Hotel Cost Support Fund is Friday 3rd February 2022. No further applications will be considered after this date.


All students who personally incurred quarantine hotel cost upon arrival in the UK are eligible to apply. Please note students domiciled in a country not on the red list, but who travelled to Manchester via a red list country will not be eligible for support.

Only those students coming to the UK for the first time to join their course, or to continue their course in academic year 2021/22 following a period of remote study will be eligible to apply for the fund.

Students should also note that the fund is NOT available to any student who chose to leave the UK for the Christmas vacation and whose country of domicile subsequently changed status on the government’s red list. Any return quarantine requirements, including costs, for travel back to the UK would need to be covered by the student.

What costs can I claim for?

We will reimburse the cost of a required ‘quarantine stay’ in a government approved hotel, if you are travelling from a designated ‘red list’ country at the start of the 2021 academic year. Please note you cannot claim for any costs incurred by dependants. The fund will not cover the cost of PCR tests for students arriving for the 2021/22 academic year.

Please note if you are sharing hotel quarantine costs with someone other than a family member or dependant then you will be reimbursed your share of the total cost. For example, if you are in paired quarantine with a fellow student and the total quarantine hotel cost is £2,400, the University will look to reimburse you for your share of that cost i.e. £1,200.

What evidence is required?

Alongside the details required in the application form you will need to provide evidence/proof of the expense being claimed for.

We will accept receipts, invoices, email confirmations, and/or credit card and bank statements that detail the expense. 

You may also be asked to provide evidence that you were not previously in the UK during the 2021/22 academic year. 


How do I make a claim?

Claimants will need to fully complete the application form and submit it (alongside the required evidence) to funding@manchester.ac.uk using the subject heading ‘Quarantine Hotel Expense Claim.’

When will I know if my application has been successful?

All applications will be reviewed upon receipt and students notified of a decision as soon as possible. Applicants will be notified by email.

In order to receive a payment students must ensure they have submitted their UK bank details online. However, you do not have to wait to open a UK bank account before submitting your application.
