Student Finance - Estrangement/Independent student status 

Information for students who wish to be assessed independently of their parent(s)' household income with Student Finance. This document outlines the criteria required to be considered an independent student, how to apply and some useul tips to assist your application.

Key Information

  • If you fit the eligibility of an Independent Student, Student Finance’s assessment will not include your parental household income.
  • To apply for independent student status, you should send a cover letter to Student Finance outlining the relevant details of your personal circumstances and supporting evidence.
  • If Student Finance are satisfied with the evidence you have provided to qualify as an estranged or independent student, you may also be eligible for bursary funding from the University.
