Scams and Risks

This document provides advice and guidance on making sensible financial choices to minimise any adverse risks to your future such as credit and debt, overdrafts and loans (both student and payday).

We have also detailed some scams that we have unfortunately seen in recent years targeted at University of Manchester students in order to help you to avoid these and provide advice on what to do if you are the victim of fraud.

Key Information

  • We have a dedicated webpage detailing the most frequent and most recent scams and financial risks that students may face
  • There are different forms of credit and debit and these not only have an immediate impact but can also have consequences for the future
  • Payday loans are often hard to pay back and lead to a vicious circle of debt. More help and advice is availble - please read the document for more information.
  • Unfortunately there are some scams which are targeted directly at students. Learn more about how to avoid these and where you can get support if you think you may have been a victim of a scam.
