Police Registration in the UK

Police registration appointments have been suspended by Greater Manchester Police until further notice.

If you have booked an appointment or have an appointment due in the next month, you need to keep the evidence of your appointment which shows that you done what you can to meet the conditions of your visa. When appointments resume, you will need to rebook your appointment through your MyManchester portal and attend your appointment with the police to fulfil your visa conditions.

If you have recemtly arrived in the UK and have not yet booked your police registration appointment, you will only be able to book an appointment when Greater Manchester Police resumes its police registration service. Check this page regularly for any updates.


Who Should Register?

Tier 4 students from certain countries are required by law to register with the local police within seven days of arriving in the UK. If you are required to register with the police this condition will be stated on your visa vignette or BRP Collection letter. You should check if your nationality requires police registration below and complete this, even if the condition is not included on any of your documents.

You must register with the police or make an appointment to register within seven days of your arrival in the UK, or if you move from another part of the UK, otherwise you could face a large fine or even six months imprisonment. You must also update the Police Registration Certificate with relevant changes of circumstance, such as a new address or passport. Please see below.

It is advisable that you keep your Police Registration Certificate in a safe place, along with your passport and BRP card (if you have one). If you lose it you must report it as soon as possible and get a replacement.

Please see this list of nationalities that require police registration upon arrival in the UK. If your nationality is on this webpage then you need to follow the guidance to register with the police and keep your certificate updated throughout your stay in the UK.

If you have not had a police registration appointment this academic year and do not have any dependants then you can book your appointment yourself by logging into My Student Life and then selecting Police Registration. You will be given the next available appointment.

If you have already had a police registration appointment this year or need to book a family appointment then you must email ssc@manchester.ac.uk and include your full name and your student ID number with the subject heading 'police registration'. The Services Delivery Team in the Student Services Centre will either reactivate your ability to book the police appointment through MyManchester or they will book the appointment for you (if you have dependants).

Please do not worry if your appointment is not within the 7-day deadline for registering with the police. You only need to have booked your appointment.

You must attend an appointment to inform the police within seven days if you:

  • change your UK address (this can be done at any police station without an appointment if you have a police registration certificate issued by Greater Manchester Police)
  • extend or change your immigration permission (visa)
  • change your place of study
  • obtain a new passport
  • change your name
  • change your marital status

There is no charge for these updates, but remember to take written proof of the change (eg. a letter from your accommodation provider or University).
