Starting your Course

The start of the academic year can be a busy time, but it is very important that you follow the guidance below and ensure you have done everything needed to start your student journey at the University of Manchester.

International Check-In is part of the University registration process for international students and must be completed within your registration period. This takes place in the Student Services Centre (number 57 on the campus map) and is where you must provide evidence of your immigration permission in the UK to show that you are permitted to study.

It is very important that you complete International Check-In to ensure that you can start studying your course at the University. You should complete International Check-In before you start your course.

International Check-in must be completed as part of registration at the University. In most cases students must bring their current passport and visa to the Student Services Centre where these are scanned into the University system. Please read the information below to see how to complete International Check-in depending on your situation.

If you are collecting your Tier 4 Visa (BRP card) from the University

This will be stated on your visa decision letter. If you have chosen to collect your BRP card from the University you need to bring your passport to the Student Services Centre. We will scan your passport and you can collect your BRP card at the same time. You must wait until you have received an email from the University which confirms that your BRP card is ready for collection before you attend International Check-In. If you are collecting the BRP card from the University you do not need to have done this before the deadline given on the BRP Collection letter which you receive when your visa application is granted.

If you are collecting your Tier 4 Visa (BRP card) from a post office

This will be stated on your visa decision letter. If you have chosen to collect your BRP card from a post office in Manchester you must do this before attending International Check-In.  Your visa decision letter states when and where you need to collect your BRP card. To complete International Check-In you must bring your current passport and your BRP card to the Student Services Centre.

If you are applying for a new Tier 4 visa in the UK using the University's Check and Send Service

If you are eligible to apply for a new Tier 4 visa in the UK then you should use the University's Check and Send Service. This is where we check your visa application for you before you complete and pay for it. To complete International Check-In you must bring all your visa application documents to the Student Services Centre, including your current passport and visa. We will check your application and email you further instructions. You must bring your application to our office before your new course start date.

If you are applying for a new Tier 4 visa in the UK independently

If you decide to apply independently instead then you must provide evidence that you have submitted a valid visa application to the Student Services Centre. You should bring a print-out of your visa application Document Checklist to show that you have completed and paid for a visa application. When your application is decided you must bring your passport and new visa to the Student Services Centre.

If you have a different visa type e.g. Short-Term Student

If you receive your full visa before you travel (Short-Term Student visa, or Tier 4 visa for a course less than 6 months), or already hold a different visa type that permits studying, then you must bring your current passport and visa to the Student Services Centre to complete International Check-In.

You may need to book an appointment to register with the police within 7 days of arriving in the UK. This depends on your nationality. Please see this section on police registration for more information.

You may need to attend your School office and present the original versions of the documents you used to obtain your offer of study. This includes your academic qualification and English language evidence. Your School will be in contact with you during the start of year with further instructions about what you must do to complete the 'Sight of Originals' process.

Landlords are required to check the immigration status of all new tenants aged 18 or over, who are renting property from them to make sure that they have legal status in the UK. You will therefore be required to prove to your landlord that you have valid immigration permission (visa) to be in the UK.

You must provide your passport and visa as evidence of your ‘right to rent’ in the UK. Your visa may be in your passport or in a biometric residence permit (BRP card). Your landlord or letting agent will need to see your original documents and take copies of them.

If you have recently applied for a visa extension your documents may be held at UKVI for some time. If you cannot prove your immigration status to your landlord, they will have to contact UKVI to conduct a check on your immigration status. This check will take two working days. You will therefore need to provide them with information about your visa application such as your biometric letter or cover sheet with your reference number.

Please contact us if you have any problems demonstrating your immigration status to a landlord. You can also see more information on the government website.

To open a bank account in the UK you usually need to present your passport and visa/ BRP card to the bank, along with a bank letter confirming your student details. You can collect your bank letter from the University campus. This is the Student Services Centre, except in September when the location changes. Your Arrival Guide will confirm where you can collect your letter if you are arriving in September.
